Featured Speaker: Jackie Kallen

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a woman working in a man dominated field? Have you worried that people might not take you seriously? Jackie Kallen has faced those obstacles, along with many more! Jackie started off as a journalist for a daily newspaper, when she decided to write an article, on a young professional fighter from Detroit, named Thomas Hearns. She covered Thomas after he had fought a few four-round fights and she ended up being his publicist for over a decade. After ten years in journalism she decided to try managing and she has stuck with it ever since. When Jackie first started managing, she struggled with male boxers feeling comfortable with a female manager.  At the time, women's boxing was basically non-existent. Once she got started, the word traveled fast, Jackie was trustworthy, and treated her boxers with respect. At the beginning she had to deal with sexual harassment, but she just laughed it off, continued to do her job, and eventually it subsided. Her colorful life was the inspiration for the 2004 movie, Against the Ropes, staring Meg Ryan and Omar Epps. She also worked as a consultant for Mark Burnett's reality television series The Contender. Jackie is an inspirational speaker who speaks in a way that informs people that they can be whatever they want, regardless of their sex and race. They can not only dream, but make their dreams a reality!

The Best is Yet to Come...

Curious to know about the future? Well here is a sneak preview...

If you love hearing stories about love, family and friends, Debbie Macomber's books are the right match for you! Rose Harbor in Bloom is a story about several different people who live or have come back to live in Cedar Cove to get over one loved one and find another.

Tragedy is a life event that we would all like to press fast  forward through. Lucky for you, Wally Lamb is coming out with a new book, called: We are Water. This book explains human resilience when dealing with a marriage and a family.

Would you like to add a little drama in your life? Scott Turow combined murder, sex, and betrayal into Identical. Based loosely on the myth of Castor and Pollux, it's the story of Paul and Cass Giannis and the complex relationship between their family and neighbors.

When you finish the books listed above, two more great reads, will be ready for you later this year from speakers Mindee Doney and Mahtob Mahmoody

Great Books from Great Speakers

There is nothing like buying a new book and flipping through those crisp never been touched pages. Summer is a new season to crack open a great book and here are some suggestions.

Do you like books that make your imagination wander? If so, Buzz Aldrin's book, Mission to Mars, is the right book for you! Buzz Aldrin goes into great detail on how, when, and why we should travel to Mars. He has already been to the moon with Neil Armstrong, so it is safe to say, he knows what he is talking about.

Do you like history, people, and culture? We found just the book for you, New England Notebook by Ted Reinstein.  He has been a reporter for eighteen years, traveling, talking to people, and writing several reports about it all. How can a man like this not have various stories to share?

Erik Wahl is a recognized artist and speaker who believes everyone is creative. Do you want to bring out your creative personality? Have you ever dreamed of being a poet or maybe a writer? This summer take some time and teach yourself to unthink about life for a little while and get in touch with your artsy side!

Do you find the new age of data confusing? Do you wish someone or something would explain it to you? Thomas Davenport is here to help with his new book Keeping Up with the QuantsMaybe you will be able to show your kids a thing or two about technology!

                                    Additionally...

Billy Hayes writes about his prison experience in The Midnight Express Letters: From a Turkish Prison 1970-1975. This book withholds a compelling collection of letters that Billy wrote to his girlfriend, family, and friends, during his years inside the Turkish Prison. This book will give you a raw look into Billy's life.

How to cope with stressful times

Along with poetry, April is National Stress Awareness Month. In light of recent tragedies, it's safe to say that these times aren't easy for many. College students are sleepless due to finals and, of course, it's tax season. We have over 100 time management, stress and life balance speakers with ideas of their own on how to find your balance.

Kay Frances has a message to share: "lighten up, stress less, and take care of ourselves." Her stress is on being care-free and finding the humor in any situation. Frances worked as a professional stand-up comedian for many years. This, coupled with her experience and education as a stress management specialist, makes her events helpful and fun.

Dr. Hunter "Patch" Adams has a similar approach as Frances. He believes that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process. Patch's experience with health and mental professionals has allowed him to explore the relationship between humor and therapy while also using his  unique blend of knowledge, showmanship and hands on teaching techniques.

James Mapes has a more serious approach  as he speaks on patient pre-operation and post-operation healing therapy. Mapes believes that reducing negative stress can reduce fear, improve immune function,  reduce pain, and help heal faster from surgery. This program teaches stress-relieving techniques to help in all of these areas.

Remember that when times get rough, a simple laugh can make the difference. Stay strong everyone, Boston Strong!

It's National Poetry Month!

National Poetry Month was first introduced in April 1996 and is intended to celebrate poets and their work, as well as raise poetry's awareness and appreciation.

Abiola Valentine is a poet who uses writing as a way to express the variety of human emotions people feel. Her poetry promotes self-esteem, self-respect, self-discipline and love for the unity of humanity. Valentine is also a speaking artist and has presented her original spoken work in many different capacities, as well as the works of others.

Nikki Giovanni is one of the most widely-read American poets. Her poetry focuses on the individual and the power one has to make a difference in oneself and, in turn, the lives of others. Last week, Giovanni was on NPR reading aloud an original tweet poem about West Virginia.

Sonia Sanchez is a well-respected poet and international speaker. She has lectured at over 500 universities and colleges in the United States, and has read her poetry in Africa, Cuba, England, the Caribbean, Australia, Europe and more. Sanchez read her poem "Morning Song and Evening Walk for Martin Luther King" at the Peace Ball in Washington, D.C.
